Licensing

TallyPrime Silver vs Gold: which licence does your business need?

By the PowerTally team 3 min read

Silver is for one user, Gold is for a team on the same office network, and TallyPrime Server comes in when many people work at once. Here’s how to choose.

Two editions, one product

TallyPrime is sold in two editions, Silver and Gold. Both are the same TallyPrime, with the same accounting, inventory, banking and reporting. The difference is how many people can use it at the same time.

That makes the choice simpler than it first looks: count the people who need to enter or check data in Tally during a normal working day, and whether they need to do it at the same time.

TallyPrime Silver: one user at a time

Silver is a single-user licence. Only one person can use it at a time, and the licence can’t be shared across the computers on your network. If someone else needs to open TallyPrime, the first user has to close it.

It suits a startup, a sole trader or a small business where one accountant or owner keeps the books. Tally describes it as made for individual users working on one system at a time, and it can be activated on that computer and used offline.

TallyPrime Gold: a team on the same network

Gold is a multi-user licence for businesses where several people work on the same company data at the same time over a LAN, the network in your office. The licence is activated on one computer and shared with the computers connected to it.

Gold has no limit on users, so a sales desk, a store keeper and the accounts team can all record entries at once. If you expect to add staff who will need Tally, starting on Gold avoids outgrowing Silver later.

When TallyPrime Server comes in

Gold covers most offices. As the number of people working at once grows, or branches work on the same data, some businesses start to see slow performance, data conflicts or downtime. Tally aims TallyPrime Server at medium and large businesses with many simultaneous users, and it works alongside Gold to manage concurrent use of company data.

Server adds a monitor that shows who is logged in and lets administrators disconnect a session, and security levels that control who can back up or restore data. Our guide on when you need TallyPrime Server covers the signs in more detail.

Buying, renting and keeping it current

As well as buying a licence, you can rent one. Tally offers rental licences for a set period, with Tally Software Services (TSS) valid for the length of the rental, and Powercomputers offers Tally rental licences as a cost-effective way to start.

We don’t publish a price list. Tell us how many people will use TallyPrime, how many locations you have and whether you need VFD, and we’ll recommend an edition and quote it, with flexible payment plans available.
