Buying or renting a TallyPrime licence: which suits your business?

By the PowerTally team 3 min read

A bought TallyPrime licence is yours for life; a rental runs for a set period with TSS included. Here’s how each works, what happens when a rental ends and how to decide.

Two ways to get the same TallyPrime

A bought licence has lifetime validity. It comes with Tally Software Services (TSS) for a year, and after that you choose whether to renew TSS each year. TallyPrime keeps working without it; an active TSS is what brings upgrades and connected features such as data synchronization, remote access and browser reports.

A rental licence lets you use TallyPrime for a specific period on a subscription. Tally says TSS remains valid for the rental duration, so upgrades and connected features are available for as long as the rental is active. Both options come in the same editions: Silver for one user, and Gold for a team working on the same data over your office network.

When buying makes sense

Tally’s own guidance is that a lifetime licence usually makes more sense when you’ll use TallyPrime for several years. You pay for the licence once and own it, and TSS becomes a separate, optional yearly decision.

Buying suits an established business that already knows how many people need TallyPrime and expects to keep its books in it for the long term.

To decide, answer three questions: how many people will use TallyPrime at the same time (which sets Silver or Gold), how long you expect to need it, and whether you’d rather pay once or spread the cost over a subscription. If the answer to the second is “for years”, buying is usually the better fit; if it’s “for now” or “not sure yet”, a rental keeps your options open.

When renting makes sense

Tally positions rental for businesses that want a lower upfront cost, have a temporary need, or prefer to treat software as a subscription expense. That can mean a new business that wants to start without a large outlay, a project or site office that only needs TallyPrime for a while, or a company trying TallyPrime on real work before committing.

Rental periods on Tally’s pages run from a few months to a year, and what’s offered differs by country, so ask which periods are available when you get a quote.

What happens when a rental ends

To keep working normally, you renew the rental for another period before it runs out. If it expires, TallyPrime switches to educational mode, which Tally describes as having some restrictions on data entry. You can still open and see all your business data.

You can also move from a rental to a lifetime licence. Tally says your company data remains usable after the switch, with the terms depending on the plan and offer at the time. Whichever you choose, the computer holding the licence needs to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days, or it will also switch to educational mode.

Growing from Silver to Gold

If you start on Silver and more people need TallyPrime, you can change a Silver licence to Gold for an additional cost through Tally’s Customer Hub. Tally says existing add-ons transfer to the new Gold licence, and any remaining TSS validity on the Silver licence is prorated and added to Gold. Customer Hub is also where active subscriptions are viewed, renewed or upgraded.

If many people will work at once, or branches will work on the same data, look at TallyPrime Server as well, which works alongside Gold.
