TallyPrime vs QuickBooks Online for Tanzanian businesses

QuickBooks Online is cloud accounting sold as monthly plans, with inventory on its higher plans. TallyPrime is a licence you own, sold and supported in Tanzania, with inventory, costing and stock valuation choices in every edition.

The short answer

For a business in Tanzania, TallyPrime is the more practical choice: it’s sold, installed and supported here, connects to TRA’s VFD through Power VFD, and handles stock without a plan upgrade. QuickBooks Online makes most sense where Intuit sells a local edition, or where an overseas accountant already works in it.

Why TallyPrime

Where TallyPrime is the stronger choice

Sold and supported in Tanzania

Powercomputers has been a Tally partner in Tanzania since 2004, with offices in eight towns. QuickBooks’ global country selector lists Tanzania without a local QuickBooks site.

Inventory in every edition

Stock tracking, godowns and batches are part of every TallyPrime licence. On QuickBooks Online’s US plans, inventory tracking is on the Plus and Advanced plans.

Choose how stock is valued, item by item

TallyPrime offers several stock valuation methods, including average cost, FIFO, LIFO and standard cost, set per item. QuickBooks Online’s help lists FIFO and moving average cost, and the method can’t be changed later.

A licence instead of monthly bills

TallyPrime is a lifetime licence (or a rental) with an optional yearly TSS. QuickBooks Online’s paid plans are monthly subscriptions.

Users without a plan cap

A Gold licence has no limit on users over your office network. QuickBooks Online’s US plans each include a set number of users.

TRA invoices from your accounts

Power VFD lists TallyPrime as compatible for TRA invoices without a physical EFD. QuickBooks Online isn’t on Power VFD’s published compatibility list.

Being fair

When QuickBooks Online may suit you better

If your company is mainly run from a country where Intuit sells a local QuickBooks Online edition, or your accountant overseas already manages your books in it, staying on QuickBooks keeps everyone on the same system.

For a small service business that only needs invoicing and expenses in a browser, its lower plans may be enough. Check with Intuit which edition, currency and tax setup applies to a Tanzanian company before you commit.
